Steiner Sports Steroid Promotion Goes Bad
December 13th, 2007Last night I received this email in my inbox:

Creative? Yes. Funny? Yes. Offensive? Apparently to some. This afternoon just before the Mitchell Report was released Steiner emailed the following statement:
Valued Customer,
Steiner Sports would like to offer its sincerest apologies to those who were offended by our George Mitchell email special that was sent out last night. The investigation into performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball is a serious matter that we fully support. The special that was announced is now expired but we will honor the offer to those of you who chose to participate.
Thank you,
Steiner Sports Memorabilia
Classic.

Wonder how many people complained about that e-mail? Must have been at least a few. Also wonder how much the value of the signed collectibles of players mentioned in the report will decrease?

I know some people hate Steiner because of their prices, but I thought this ad was really funny and creative.
Card/memorabilia values will take a short-term drop only.

Honestly I can see how some people might be a little turned off, but to those people I say “get a f’in sense of humor”. They were having fun and trying to do a creative promotion that rewards their customers with a $50 gift certificate.
I don’t see much change in memorabilia value either. Bonds is the poster child for this mess and his good stuff still fetches $$.

Kudos to the marketing department. The good news for the customer is you bought a ball worth one amount if the guy is on the list it would probably be worth less so you at least get some compensation.

Good call Joey. I didn’t think of that, but that’s a great point. I’m guessing Clemens memorabilia is suffering right now, so that $50 is a nice little reward to make up for the change in public perception.
