Exciting McFarlane 2008 Announcements
October 23rd, 2007Last week McFarlane came fast and furious with SportsPicks announcements for 2008 in their news section. Here’s what really stood out to me:
- NHL 17 will include Joe Sakic in a retro Nordiques jersey (so cool). McFarlane will also make available modern and retro goals with peg holes for both players and goalies. I can think of some really, really cool customs that could be made with those…maybe a few Miracle on Ice one’s for the retro goal?
- NHL 19 will be a “hybrid” series with both modern players and legends. Weird, because later in 2008 NHL Legends 7 is coming out. Not sure what the point of the one hybrid series is if you’re just going to return to normal after that.
- Greg Oden will make his SportsPicks debut in March in NBA 14. Too bad he won’t take the court for another year.
- NBA Legends 4 is going to include Patrick Ewing and Spud Webb…two of my favorite basketball players from my youth. Has there ever been a little athlete with more heart? Or a big guy with a better fade away jumper?
- Dice-K will make his SportsPicks debut in MLB 21 due out in April. If his cards are any indication of his popularity, this could be the figure of the year.
- There will be a Mantle and Maris two-pack due out in June. Very, very cool. It’s hard not to love the story behind their home run chase in 1961.
- Warren Moon will get a well deserved figure in NFL Legends 4. Can’t wait to see those beautiful blue Oilers uni’s on a McFarlane.
- NFL 17 will include Randy Moss’ first figure as a Patriot. At that point, the Pats will probably have won like 30 straight games and be the best team ever (although I’m not particularly rooting for that).

Where’s Steven Jackson in series 17. Come on, you’re telling me they’re making a Thomas Jones over Steven Jackson? Ridiculous.

Agreed 100% Jacob, I actually thought the same thing. The ONLY reason I bit my tongue is because I’m a Rams fan and well, they suck and he’s having a crappy season. I know he’s hurt, but the Tampa game is the only game he played well, and he single handedly lost the Carolina game with those 2 late fumbles…so I’m holding back on calling him deserving just yet.

understandable. that’s the first thing that came to my mind too as to why he was left out. i just miss seeing rams figures. they are making series 17 and we haven’t seen a rams figure since torry holt series 8. they have only made four rams into mcfarlanes, randy moss has four himself. not even an orlando pace who is one of the best linemen in the league, if he’s not injured. why the wide gap between figures?

Jacob, I have no idea lol. St. Louis is a great sports town, so you’d figure McFarlane would be itching to produce figures. There’s NO reason they haven’t made an Isaac Bruce, Marc Bulger, or Orlando Pace - all 3 of which are very, very deserving. Of course, that argument is hard to make right now with the anemic offense they’re throwing out there. The sad thing is the defense is playing pretty good. Any sane fan would have thought going into the season that if the D played well the Rams would be a lock for the playoffs…oh well, there’s always next yr

yeah, they haven’t decided who will be in series 18 yet right. any idea when the announcement for those figures will be out?

This year they announced NFL 15 in March http://www.spawn.com/news/news2.aspx?id=13083 and it came out in October like NFL 18 will, so that’s probably a good barometer.

Cool. Is there any way I can let the people at mcfarlane know that they should add Stephen Jackson, or any of the other deserving Rams in series 18?

I think your best bet is to hop on the Spawn forum and PM Mark Weber, the moderator who is also the director of marketing or advertising or something like that http://board.spawn.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15. He’s always replied to me and been very courteous, although sometimes it takes a while to hear from him.
